This presentation will share findings from a study recently published in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence examining how work in the domestic and sexual violence fields can shape providers’ romantic and sexual lives, an often-overlooked facet of vicarious trauma. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on these impacts and explore strategies at both the individual and organizational levels to help reduce them.

This presentation will explore how providers’ identities shape experiences at the intersection of domestic and sexual violence work and their own romantic and sexual lives, with attention to how these factors influence both experience and appropriate supports. It will also acknowledge the study’s limitations and highlight areas where further research is needed to better understand the experiences of populations underrepresented in the current data.

    Attendees will be able to:
    • identify ways in which work in the domestic and sexual violence fields can impact providers’ romantic and sexual lives.
    • analyze the connections between these impacts and broader frameworks of vicarious trauma.
    • apply individual and organizational strategies to mitigate these effects in their professional practice
