NASW-NYS: Mental Health Issues of Adoptees: What Clinicians Need To Know
This training is a comprehensive review of the issues adoptees bring to therapy. The training will include a review of pre-and post-adoption risk factors and protective factors in the adoptive family. Relinquishment trauma will be presented as a key factor in the mental health issues of adoptees. Significant factors that impact an adoptee’s mental health, such as, adoption traumas of late discovery adoptees, adoptees being raised “as if” born into a family, and racial trauma experienced by transracially adopted adoptees, will also be explored. With a thorough understanding of the complexity of mental health issues of adoptees, attendees will be able to complete an adoption sensitive assessment.
