On March 10, 2020, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) issued a tele brief as an update on the COVID – 19 virus. In this brief, the impact of infection for older adults was highlighted with the highest rates of severe infection rates being among people age 60+ and the “highest risk of serious illness and death… in people older than 80 years.”  The primary means of managing this concern has been through social distancing especially for this most vulnerable population. Yet, it was only one year ago, that institutions such as the National Institute on Aging and AARP were reporting on the “Loneliness Epidemic” among older adults. NIH reported that “Research has linked social isolation and loneliness to higher risks for a variety of physical and mental conditions: high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, a weakened immune system, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and even death” (NIH, 2019). Want then can be done to protect the health of older adults in our communities in the light of both concerns? This webinar will address the issue of social isolation in this context. We will examine the impact of social isolation and loneliness on not only the mental health but also the physical health of older adults, present on interventions found effective and plan for ways to modify interventions that control for COVID-19 concerns while also protecting older adults from the damaging effects of social isolation.
