Decolonizing Ethics in Social Work Practice 1 CEU - Cultural Responsiveness or Ethics Presenter: Dr. Neerja Singh, PhD, MSW, LICSW, LADC
Social work ethics in the U.S. have been shaped by Eurocentric frameworks that often overlook cultural knowledge, silence lived experiences, and reinforce systems of surveillance and control. This workshop will engage practitioners in re-examining the ethical foundations of social work through a decolonizing lens—centering equity, lived experience, and community leadership.
Learning Objectives: 1. Understand how historical and structural inequities have shaped ethical norms in social work. 2. Critically reflect on how bias, surveillance, and deficit-based approaches undermine ethical practice. 3. Explore decolonizing ethics frameworks rooted in cultural humility, relational accountability, and community-defined well-being. 4. Develop strategies to integrate decolonized ethics into daily practice, supervision, and policy advocacy.
About the Presenter:
Dr. Neerja Singh, PhD, MSW, LICSW, LADC, is a seasoned mental health professional with over 20 years of leadership and clinical experience in public health and human services. A 2023 Bush Foundation Fellow, she has extensive experience in trauma-informed care, ethics, and culturally responsive practices. Dr. Singh is currently the Chair of the NASW-MN Ethics Committee, reflecting her deep commitment to ethical practices and professional integrity. She is dedicated to promoting professional sustainability and ethical well-being through integrated self-care practices.
