This training provides mental health professionals with essential knowledge and practical tools to effectively identify, assess, and treat screen and internet addiction, including problematic behaviors related to internet gaming, social media dependency, pornography, and online gambling. In today's digitally saturated world, excessive screen use is increasingly recognized as a significant contributor to various mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, attention challenges, and social isolation. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the neuroscience underpinning addictive screen behaviors, examining how excessive digital engagement alters brain development and impacts social and emotional functioning. Emphasis will be placed on exploring differential diagnosis, particularly distinguishing between symptoms of ADHD and addictive screen use, as well as recognizing intersections with neurodivergent populations, including individuals on the autism spectrum. The training uniquely addresses the critical treatment implications for LGBTQ youth, who may rely heavily on digital communities to find safe spaces and affirming interactions not always accessible in their physical environments. While acknowledging the protective and positive potential of digital connectivity for LGBTQ youth, the training equips practitioners with nuanced strategies to differentiate healthy digital engagement from addictive patterns, thus ensuring supportive interventions that preserve essential digital communities while fostering healthier screen use habits. Furthermore, attendees will explore crucial research related to health disparities intersecting with problematic screen use within Black and Brown communities, highlighting systemic factors that increase vulnerability and influence the presentation and treatment of digital addictions. By integrating culturally responsive approaches, clinicians will learn to tailor interventions effectively to address the unique experiences and challenges faced by racially marginalized clients. Treatment approaches covered in this training include the process addiction model, which provides a robust framework for conceptualizing and intervening with screen-based addictive behaviors. Attachment-focused strategies will also be highlighted, emphasizing the importance of secure relational patterns in mitigating problematic screen use, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Participants will engage with evidence-based behavioral interventions designed to empower clients in re-establishing control and intentionality in their digital interactions. Through relevant case studies, interactive exercises, and practical treatment planning activities, attendees will leave equipped with actionable insights and therapeutic skills necessary for guiding clients towards a balanced, meaningful relationship with technology. This presentation offers an invaluable opportunity for mental health professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in addressing one of the most prevalent and nuanced clinical challenges of our digital age.
