Solution Focused Therapy is very effective when working with couples, because it breaks through typical couples’ patterns that cause problems between people. Solution Focused Therapy challenges the couple to share their vision for their future and then the clinician expertly amplifies these “solutions” in order to help the couple find their common ground. Throughout the sessions, the clinician needs to be prepared o interrupt pre-existing thinking and speaking patterns, in order to support the couple in their quest to fulfill their shared future vision. Solution Focused exceptions are a powerful intervention with couples, as the clients’ answers provide an opportunity to thicken their new neuropathways that are reinforced in sessions and outside sessions. Finally, Solution Focused scaling helps the couple to understand quantitatively, where they stand on each goal, and also what each person is willing to do to move forward toward their shared goal in between sessions. The clinician must be prepared to take an active role in sessions. Participants will leave this workshop prepared to integrate the Solution Focused philosophy and techniques immediately into their practice.
