Ethics Table Talk: Ethical Considerations for the Use of Psychedelics in Mental Health Treatment
This Table Talk will raise awareness among mental health professionals about the use of psychedelics in mental health treatment and explore key clinical, ethical, and legal considerations. Our esteemed panel includes Dr. Jeffrey Zabinski who will provide both medical and social work perspectives and delve into the research, and clinical work being conducted at Columbia University. Drs. Allan Barsky and Brenden Hargett will expound on the ethical and legal considerations in this area of practice.
This live virtual event is part of NASW’s Ethics Table Talk platform, which provides a safe space for discussing critical issues facing mental health professionals through the lens of ethics and other considerations. This virtual platform serves as a vehicle for having courageous conversations that educate and inform sound ethical thinking about challenging and at times controversial topics. We may not have all the answers, but we will raise key questions:
What are psychedelics?
Is it legal to use psychedelics in mental health treatment?
Are there inherent concerns for professionals using psychedelics in mental health treatments?
What are some fundamental ethical considerations for the use of psychedelics in mental health care?
What other key considerations should mental health practitioners take into account when considering engaging in this practice area? e.g. training, licensure, insurance
