THIS IS A LIVE VIRTUAL EVENTUnderstanding and Supporting Clients After Abortions: A Training for Social Workers
Thursday, September 10, 2024 - 9:30am-12:30pm CT via Zoom
Presenter: Rachel L. Dyer, M.S
3 CEUs - may be counted as Ethics, Clinical or Cultural Responsiveness
This three-hour training will provide social workers with foundational information about working with clients who have had abortions. Attendees will learn about the myths and facts about the relationships between abortions, mental health, and emotions, as well as receive a framework through which to understand their clients’ experiences. Attendees will also reflect on their own abortion-related values, and practice identifying and vetting additional supportive resources for their clients.
Learning Objectives:
Identify your personal abortion-related values and how they might impact your work.
Define the difference between mental health (problems) and (negative) emotions.
Explain what the best scientific evidence suggests about the relationship between abortions and emotions.
Demonstrate identifying and betting a possible after-abortion support resource for clients.
About the Presenter
Rachel L. Dyer, M.S. (she/her) is a pro-abortion scholar-clinician-activist working at the intersection of abortion and mental health. Training as a researcher and psychotherapist, Rachel focuses on how dominant sociocultural narratives impact pregnancy and family-building desires, decisions, and experiences, and how mental health and other care providers can support patients around these experiences. From 2021-2023, Rachel served as the Executive Director of Exhale Pro-Voice, a nonprofit organization providing nonjudgmental support to people after their abortions. Under her leadership, Exhale Pro-Voice proudly took an explicit abortion-positive stance and grounded clearly in research evidence. Rachel will be graduating with her PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in August 2024 and will subsequently begin a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Psychology position at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.
