Gettin’ By: How poverty changes the brain, which changes everything 1 CEU - Cultural Responsiveness, Ethics, or Macro Presenter: Linda Riddell, MS The most important and overlooked aspect of poverty is how it changes the brain. In this session, you learn how poverty changes the brain and see how the game Gettin' By simulates these changes. Developed by an epidemiologist who specializes in poverty, and after five years of testing, this training is shown to shift attitudes toward poverty. You will learn the science behind the game, and the hidden impact of poverty on the brain, body, and behavior. Using real-life client scenarios, you will practice thinking about what you don't naturally. Once we know better, we do better. Learning Objectives:1. Attendees will describe how poverty changes the way brains work. 2. Attendees will explain factors that interfere with a person’s ability to receive new information and act upon it. 3. Attendees will practice discerning a client’s bandwidth, power, and hope and how to be poverty-informed and sensitive to these factors. About the Presenter: Linda Riddell, MS, is an epidemiologist specializing in poverty and the creator of Gettin’ By, an interactive training that helps professionals work more effectively with low-income communities by demonstrating how poverty impacts the brain. After five years of development, she launched the program nationally in 2019 and now presents it at conferences across the country. A skilled and engaging speaker, she focuses on translating brain science into practical tools. Riddell holds a master’s in health policy and management from the University of Southern Maine and has completed advanced coursework at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. *Please check with the regulatory board in the state(s) where you are licensed to ensure this course meets continuing education requirements.
