A Wolf in Bears Clothing: Lesser Known Medical Conditions that Present as Common Mental Health Disorders 1 CEU - Clinical or Ethics Presenter:Kelly Hildre, MSW, LICSW
We all know the first rule of thumb – rule out potential underlying medical conditions – but how? Many medical conditions can mimic the behavioral and emotional symptoms of trauma or mental health, leading to misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment. This session will explore a few key lesser-known medical conditions that may present as psychological-related symptoms in children and adults. Anecdotally, the presenter will share her experiences as an out-patient therapist trying to identify and support “treatment resistant” conditions. Participants will learn key screening techniques, red flags to watch for, and strategies for interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure accurate assessment and appropriate interventions.
Learning Objectives: 1. Obtain basic knowledge of the presentation for several lesser known neurocomplex medical conditions that may mimic psychological disorders. 2. Describe how to differentiate between symptoms correlated with mental illness and symptoms due to a possible underlying medical condition, identifying at least one screening tool. 3. Compile resources to effectively refer clients for appropriate services and identify strategies to collaborate effectively with referral sources to best meet client’s needs.
About the Presenter:
With over 13 years of experience in mental health and social services, Kelly is dedicated to providing compassionate and effective psychotherapy to individuals ages 12 and up. Kelly specializes in using a Brain-Body Model of therapy, integrating the latest neuroscience with traditional and somatic therapeutic practices to enhance overall well-being. In addition to Kelly’s clinical practice, they are deeply passionate about evolving the field of mental health to increase quality, access and ingenuity in services – particularly in rural MN where they have served their entire career. Kelly pursues that passion through means of community education, advocacy, and high-quality clinical supervision.
