Ethical Dilemmas in Healthcare: Practices & PrinciplesPresenter: Peter Bauck, PhD, BCC1.5 CEUs - may be counted as ethics
(live training was 2 CEUs, recorded content is 1.5 hours)There are difficult decisions every day in healthcare. Healthcare staff, patients, and families put together treatment plans for numerous health issues in complex situations. Some of these situations involve conflict and uncertainty around the values of the healthcare staff, patients, and families involved. The latter situations are ethical dilemmas and challenging to navigate. We will look at one model for working through ethical dilemmas in healthcare: the four-box method. The boxes provide a way to work through an ethical dilemma while placing healthcare practice and ethical principles in conversation. Our time will be grounded in a specific ethics case from the acute care setting.
About the PresenterPeter Bauck is a director of spiritual care and provides ethics consults. He has worked in chaplaincy, healthcare leadership, and clinical ethics for fifteen years. He has served on ethics committees for fourteen years and provided consults for over six of those years. In addition to his chaplaincy work, he has published in clinical ethics, conducted social science research, and advised on healthcare directive initiatives. He has a wonderful wife and two children.
