Safety Planning with Youth and Families: Best Practices for Mental Health and Community Based Providers
This 2.75 hour training is a follow up to the suicide assessment training in October 2022. Dennis Walker (Vice President of Clinical Operations, Emergency Services and Intake at Seacoast Mental Health Center) and Kim Goldberg (Director of Acute Services, Lakes Region Mental Health Center) will be presenting on the importance of safety planning throughout your work with youth and families as well as best practice and examples you can use. The second half of the training will be led by a panel of social workers and child therapists who will discuss how they use safety planning in their settings. Participants will also have the opportunity to practice these skills.
The first hour of the training will be focused on the evidence base behind using active safety plans with youth and their families. Templates will be presented and shared with participants. There will be time for small group break outs to practice safety planning techniques. There will be an additional hour with a panel of social workers from a variety of settings: community mental health, integrated primary care, schools, and private practice. The panel will provide real life examples of how they have used safety planning in these settings and how to take a collaborative approach in creating safety plans.
